Zephyr

Zephyr and Ella were both rescues. A great ferret owner and an active member of Triangle Ferret Lovers (TriFL), Celia Wright, had taken them and would have gladly given them a forever home. I remember working with Celia at an education day TriFL did at a PetSmart. We compared notes on her 10 year old ferret and my two (Podo and Kodo) who were getting close to that age. Sadly, in early 2005 Celia passed away. A notice was put out on the club mailing list and I volunteered to giver her two ferrets a good home for the rest of their lives.
The first thing that struck me about Zephyr was that she looks like a female version of
Tenchi. She has the same classic sable markings and the same coloration. The second
thing I noticed immediately was that she is very playful, very independent, and a real
brat. To Zephyr "no" means more attention if she keeps doing what she's not supposed to.
Of course, Tenchi was like that at first too. Tenchi was the ferret who made me fall in
love with ferrets as pets and Zephyr has a similar personality, which is actually quite
nice to see, even when she's being bratty.
The point, of course, is that Zephyr loves attention. She also loves rough play and wrestling. She loves to be chased and will chase a ball if you throw it. She'll also chase me around, often doing an good imitation of a puppy, much like Avon used to.
Zephyr is a high energy ferret, and she's the first very rough and tumble companion that
Chin Soon has really taken to. They hit it off immediately
and are always dancing around each other and wrestling. I think Zephyr is still really
close to Ella but Chin Soon has
the energy to match her bounce for bounce and pounce for pounce.
Zephyr is my ultimate tunnel ferret. She loves the things and if I rearrange them regularly that means plenty of energy and play for her. Zephyr will be inside the hard tunnels scratching at the walls and I am expected to scratch back. She sticks her little nose through the holes and I am supposed to stick my finger in. She then gently nips at my finger and try to get me to follow her to a different hole. Zephy also likes to wrestle in the tunnels and chase the other ferrets though the tunnels. She likes me to lift up or rough up the soft, flexible tunnels when she's in them. It's all great fun for her.
More of Zephyr's story, with pictures (of course), will be here very soon.
